Removal of a portion or all the parotid gland is a surgical procedure that takes approximately an hour
and a half to complete, and patients can expect to leave four hours after their arrival. A small drain is
placed under the skin by the incision and is removed the following morning.
With this procedure, patients can expect some mild discomfort that should subside over the days
following the operation. Normal activity can be resumed in as little as one or two days, and there are no
dietary restrictions necessary with a parotid gland excision. Saliva production is not affected.
